beat the hot weather with art GIVEAWAY :)

Michigan is in the midst (like many other states) of an absolutely hideous heatwave. Today got up to 96 degrees and tomorrow is supposed to top out over 100. Add humidity and storms and you've got a generally large group of grumpy people.

I was complaining to a friend the other day that there is absolutely no point for it to be this hot, that it serves no purpose. She disagreed - said its perfect weather for dyeing brilliant colors on fabric.

I kept thinking about that. That even though things are seriously out of whack in the comfort area, its not impossible to find a little something good about it. Hot sweltering weather that threatens to make you sweat buckets within seconds? Perfect weather for staying in your studio and making art. No-guilt-staying-indoors kind of weather.

To that end, I thought you might like to take a little class with me via my DVD Print Design Compose. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite surface design technique is and I'll pick a random winner on Saturday and post the result on Sunday.

In the DVD I show you how to do three surface design techniques (thermofax screen printing - shocker, right? ;-) - , soy wax batik and freezer paper stencils. Then we actually cut up the fabric we print (easier then you think!) and design an abstract art quilt (the one on the cover of the DVD is the example in the video) from start to finish.

Here's a little preview that Interweave put together (love the freeze frame at the beginning, looks like I'm blowing out candles!) to give you a sense of the DVD:

Get commenting and stay cool! :)

My favorite is screen printing ( with thermo fax screens) '!

I like to paint fabric, however I have a few thermofax stencils I've never got around to using.

Just one?!?! Hmmm. Can I say layering techniques is best?

I like the thermo fax screens. If you think its hot in Mich you should come visit us in Omaha, the temp has been 98-104 with heat index 112-114 since last week. I think I am melting, but I would rather have the heat the the below 0 stuff.

I love all different kinds of resist techniques...and screen printing and discharge....

I love silk screening either with found objects or your fantastic thermofax screens. We could use a "little" of your heat. It has been 10-15 degrees below normal all summer. I'm not complaining! I love 85 degrees and no humidity.

Make mine screen printing with dyes, deconstructed not stirred.

I'm still in the experimenting stage, but I'll say that thermofax printing is wonderful and my current fave.

Haven't tried enough of them to have a favorite. Embellishment with beads and yarns is more my speed, but I'm starting to understand the lure of screen printing. It adds so much to the fabric...I want to learn more!

Well, I don't really have one yet because I've not tried too many - newbie here. LOL I do like the unpredictability of discharge techniques.

How can I choose? I do love resists though. Thanks for the giveaway!

Still playing around, but screen printing with thermofax screens is a Ton of fun =)

I work very intuitively...so I absolutely adore screen printing...any kind of screen printing...improvisational screen printing...deconstructed screen printing...screen printing with masks, etc. You get the picture! And of course Thermofax screens are the best for photos.

I enjoy incorporating found objects and beading but I would love to learn more.

My favorite is stamping with hand-carved stamps. Simple, yes. I tend to stay away from any technique that requires me to work in a well-ventilated space. I'm not so good with following directions, so simple is best for me.

I enjoy using Shiva paintstiks and stenciling is my top pick--at the moment!

Additionally, I thoroughly enjoy embellishing with tons of quilting....line after line with the fabric barely showing in some cases.

Favorite technique(s):
Textile paint & dye. So much that I have a whole etsy shop full of painted and dyed creations. So much that I spent a chunk of yesterday cutting 2 bolts of fabric for dyeing-on my day off from cutting fabric at my fabric store job!
At least you have rain; we have the same heat & humidity coupled with severe drought. When it does sprinkle, outdoors is a sauna.

I'm a real novice but when I last tried I liked mono-printing with gelatin.
I haven't done any thermofax screen printing but I could try!

My favorite is to use my painting to create some great painted cloth. I use my PFD fabric to blot and remove acrylic paints while I am painting. I do a technique of spraying water over a freshly painted surface creating a watery paint mixture that I blot off.
My paint surface looks great and the cloth picks up interesting designs.

Paint! That's me....I guess....I do so love to paint on my fabrics before I put them together with other stuff. :)

I like screen printing the best -- with either thermo fax screens or "silk" screens.

Using Shiva paintstiks.... cause I haven't tried anything else=)

My favourite is always the one I'm working on at present - right now it is beading. A great giveaway.

I favor stamping on fabric with paint and handmade stamps, sponges, kitchen gadgets. I love layering with the stamps etc. on paper and fabric.

at the moment, it is soy wax applied directly to the fabric and also applied to a screen for printing.

I like to use fabric to clean up after painting fabric. I seem to get the best results when things are random and unplanned. This gives me a great background to stencil, stamp,Shiva or whatever else I can think of. I can't pick just one!

Paint and bits of paper mixed with fabric is fun to me, but seeing your easy way to do screen printing has me thinking I have to try that.

Debbie said...

I have enjoyed doing stamping. Thanks for offering the DVD, Lynn!

Fulvia said...

Thanks for this!

Bethany Garner said...

Hi Lynn... watching for you everywhere I go - your work, DVD's, articles etc... and especially the terrific fabrics! Right now my favourite technique is decolourant and screen printing - paint, print, decolour and screen on new colour.

I like to use paint in different ways - stamping, flinging, and coloring the entire piece. It is hot here in Ohio also and I didn't even think that I should be out dyeing fabric!

Wen said...

Ok I'm probably way late but I started my fiber career back in the early 70's with traditional batik. So soy wax would be a cool thing to learn.

KevinB said...

hand stitching, emroidery are my favorite types of embellising.

I like screen printing and stencilling.

My all time favorite, is gelatin printing with Botanicals, a close second is now screen printing thanks to your theromfax screens also Sun-Printing

Linda Branch Dunn said...

Thermofax printing, with no rules. Flip the screen, dip it in water, use your fingers. Wonderful.

Sija said...

I would love to learn how to use the thermo fax screens.

tesuque said...

If I have a screen, my printing possibilities are endless.

Colleen Kole said...

Any kind of screen or thickened dyes with a credit card as a scraper. I am easy to please as long as I can make a mark on fabric.

Evie said...

It's winter down my part of the world!
My most used surface technique is stitch. It alters fabric in so many ways and doesn't have to be thread!

California Fiber artist and composer said...

My favorite technique is couching threads. As far as color it would be Shiva stick stenciling

Lora Martin said...

My favorite surface design? Torn between screen printing and screen discharge. Are they the same, only different?

Georgayne said...

Hand stitching over a stenciled surface. And yes it is HOT in the Midwest. I just thought I left the heat and humidity in Houston, TX !

I love block printing, but would love to learn to screen print.

Sue Andrus said...

I love puddling with paint, especially sunprinting using flowers and leaves from my gardens, foam cutouts, confetti, or anything else that will lay flat on the painted fabric. I have thought it would be fun to try screen printing.

I enjoy printing with found objects and playing with crayons, fabric and heat... want to try many more techniques in the time ahead.
