"Fiber Art Now" subscription giveaway!!!!

Do you know about Fiber Art Now?  If you don't, you really want to, trust me. :)

The photo above is the cover of their Winter 2012 issue. I'm a subscriber and I love it. The magazine is chock full of all types of fiber art.

Here is the mission statement from their website:

At Fiber Art Now, our mission is to connect and inspire the fiber arts & textiles community with the most compelling work in basketry, felting, knitting, needle arts, paper/book arts, dyeing, mixed media, surface design, quilting, sculpture, wearable art, weaving, collage, encaustic, mixed media and more.  We are a worldwide community in support of what we love.

Its a thrill to see people doing things with fiber that I would have never considered. Makes my mind stretch and want to grow my own art. Its not a how-to magazine. Instead it focuses on exhibits and artists and takes a close look at the fiber art world as a whole. Its like holding a fiber art encyclopedia in your hands, getting to know artists over a conversation (you all know how I love a good interview) and even traveling to other parts of the world. Its very special.

You can get a really good glimpse into what the magazine covers if you head on over to their website. They even have a complimentary article that you can read too. (Its in the right hand sidebar just beneath the header of the webpage. Click the photo that says "Lindsay Ketterer Gates" beneath it and the article will download for you.)  I admit, I'm also a sucker for the incredible writing that they do.

They even have a free newsletter so all the fibery goodness can land straight in your inbox. They are really passionate and love what they do and it shows in every way possible.

And the wonderful people that publish the magazine want to share it with you. They are offering a one year subscription giveaway to anyone who leaves a comment on this blog post!

They are a quarterly publication. Here are the covers from the past year:

Wouldn't you want that in your mailbox every couple of months?? :)

Just leave a comment here about why you love being a fiber artist and you'll be in the running to win. You MUST leave a contact email with your comment if you don't have a blog link I can reach you through. If I can't get in touch with you, you won't go in the drawing. I'll announce the winner on December 17 in the evening and your subscription will begin with the next issue.

Good luck! :)

  1. I love this magazine!

Now why do I love the fiber arts? (hmmm - seems I may need to do your writing class, Lynn!)

It's the tactile nature with the myriad of techniques to explore, the forms that can be created, the color play - the use of slow hand work mixed with machine work - it's the connection with hands from the past - so many things!

  2. I was saddened to see the demise of another fiber magazine - so happy to see that this one is filling that hole so nicely!

  42. I love the endless array of what can be achieved with fibre. For me, fibres call out to the creativity in my soul as no other medium alone does.

  48. I wouldn't call art what I make - it's more playing around. But then what's the definition of art - making a statement with a medium, or using a craft in an especially refined way - I always find that hard to discern. Ok but why would I want to win, well maybe to see what they think fiber art is and maybe open a new playing field for me.

  52. I deleted my prior comment because I didn't follow the rules! lol

I love being a fiber artist because working with fabric as the key piece of my work connects with my personal history, a community at large, and because it feels like a natural progression from loving fabric to working with it in my art.

  71. I think that touch is the lost sense. I can't live without having my hands touching fiber. I have painted on paper, and it just never gave me the same sense of satisfaction that painting on fabric does.

Fiber allows me to use an amazing range of techniques, such as thread painting by machine and hand embroidery. I love color, and fiber allows me to use the staggering range of commercial fabrics and to dye and paint my own.

I find the process of making fiberart to be meditative, and the process keeps me sane.

Textiles and such are irresistable - it's the colour and the texture, the richness, and the possibility. And then there is the sense of lineage with woman who have been creating with textiles for millenia. I can't not play with them! Looks like a great magazine!

    ReplyDelete
  92. I love the fiber arts because of the way it feels while you are working on your project. I was first attracted to quilting for the fact of taking a piece of fabric, cutting it up and sewing it back together made such a big impact and it went from there into other arts-embroidery, needle felting, mixed media. I love it all.

There is a whole world of fun-loving and talented fiber art people out there, this magazine shares stories about many of them as we'll as fiber art. I, myself, was first introduced to spinning and weaving in our local guild about 20 years, haven't looked back since. I am now dyeing silks, felting, handspinning and creating garments for sale. What a long wonderful trip it has been and continues to be.

  115. Wow, what a great giveaway! I love this magazine, but only get to see it when a friend brings it to meetings. This is truly one of the most beautiful fiber art magazines I have ever seen.

My life is fiber art ... the colors, textures, exciting new techniques and ways of thinking about ART.

Keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed for a chance!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I think it began with color and texture for me. I've been known to leave a fabric store with snippets of material I'll likely never turn into anything, just because I NEED to have its energy in my space; the colors inspired me, the hand intrigued me, and I fell in love with it.

When I encounter someone wearing a beautiful scarf or garment item, my hands reach for it before I'm aware of doing so. I have to feel it, to examine the weave or knit structure, to admire the yarns and colors if only for a moment. I've been known to stop people and beg them to pause and let me sketch what they're wearing.

Being a fiber artist allows me to explore weave structures, color mingling, and texture in a way that painting on canvas has never offered. Being a fiber artist means I might one day produce something that causes another hand to reach out, unbidden, in admiration.

I've only read one issue of Fiber Arts, having just discovered it this fall, but I would LOVE to win a subscription to a magazine devoted to my obsession.

  117. I'm a rug hooker and a writer. When I'm at an art fair selling rugs, I hear so many stories that I feel I need to throw the writer hat on and take them all down. "I remember doing this with my mother..." "I used to cut strips for my grandfather..." 'm amazed at how the fiber arts seem to strike a cord in so many, even if they aren't artists.
